About the Course

A discovery flight is an exciting, hands-on introductory lesson designed to give you a genuine feel for what it's like to pilot an aircraft and see if flight training is right for you.

During your discovery you'll see 30 minutes of flight time and one hour with a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI)—here is a detailed breakdown of what your experience will entail:

The Overall Experience: Approximately 1 Hour Total

The one hour with your Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) will be divided into three main phases:

1. Pre-Flight Briefing (Approx. 15-20 Minutes)

This is the ground instruction time where you'll meet your instructor and go over the plan. It often includes:

  • Introduction to the Aircraft: Your instructor will show you the training aircraft and explain its major parts, basic controls, and safety features.

  • The "Walkaround" Inspection: You'll participate in the official pre-flight inspection. This is a vital safety step where you and your CFI check the fuel and oil levels, inspect the wings, tail, control surfaces, and landing gear to ensure everything is airworthy.

  • Safety and Flight Plan: The instructor will cover basic safety procedures, explain what to expect during the flight, and review the route you'll be taking.

  • Cockpit Introduction: You'll be shown the main instruments and controls, especially the yoke and rudder pedals, and how to communicate using the headset.

2. The Flight (30 Minutes in the Air)

This is the core, hands-on experience, where you'll be seated in the pilot-in-command seat (usually the left seat) with the CFI beside you.

  • Taxi and Takeoff: Your instructor will handle the initial process of taxiing to the runway and the takeoff, as these are critical phases of flight. You'll hear the radio communications on the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency.

  • Taking the Controls: Once safely in the air and at a comfortable altitude, the instructor will hand the controls over to you. Under their constant supervision, you'll get to:

    • Steer the Plane: Use the yoke to execute gentle turns.

    • Maintain Altitude and Heading: Get a feel for keeping the plane straight and level.

    • Practice Basic Maneuvers: You might try a slow climb or descent.

  • Landing: The instructor will typically take the controls back to manage the approach and landing.

3. Post-Flight Debriefing (Approx. 10-15 Minutes)

After landing and parking the aircraft, you'll wrap up the experience:

  • Review and Feedback: Your instructor will give you feedback on how you did, answer any remaining questions you have about the flight, and discuss what you experienced.

  • Next Steps: If you are interested in pursuing a pilot's license, this is the time to ask about the training program, costs, and scheduling your first official lesson.

  • Logging the Time: Your instructor may be able to sign an official Pilot Logbook, as this flight time counts toward the minimum required hours for a Private Pilot License (PPL).

In summary, a discovery flight is much more than a scenic ride—it is your first real lesson, giving you a comprehensive introduction to the full process of piloting an aircraft
